- Head Coach Mike Zimmer said that RB Dalvin Cook will make his preseason debut against the Seahawks on Sunday Night but his reps will be limited. Probably won’t play past the first series or 2.
- RT Brian O’Neill, T/G Aviante Collins, DE Ade Aruna, CB Kris Boyd & RB De’Angelo Henderson remain out.
- RB/KR Ameer Abdullah returned to practice.
- NT Linval Joseph remains limited to individual drills only.
- CB Mike Hughes & TE David Morgan remain on the PUP list.
- DE Tashawn Bower remains on the Non Football Injury list.
1.) All of the Specialists were participating today but Wile is still not holding due to his hand injury. He is however practicing punting. Vedvik doing some punting & kicking. Bailey kicking FGs with Beebe & Vedvik taking turns holding.
*Vedvik was booming 60+ yard punts kicking from his own 30 yard line and landing them inside the 10. He also practiced Kickoffs and routinely hit them 5-6 yards deep into the end zone. He did not attempt any FGs.
*Bailey came out and hit his 1st 4 FGs with no defense and then went 7 of 7 with defense coming at him. On one of the live plays he was “iced” but still nailed the 55 yarder! He made a couple from 50 plus and seems extra motivated today. Got to the facility early. Bailey credited Rookie Austin Cutting with a good day of Long Snapping. However it is worth noting that none of his attempts were from the right hash where he has struggled throughout camp.
2.) Rookie WR Bisi Johnson took most of the reps with the starters as the “WR3”. Beebe, Badet & Taylor also rotated in with the starters. Rest of the WRs (Treadwell, Mitchell, Davis, Hollins & Zylstra) were with the 2nd, 3rd & 4th units. Johnson is definitely continuing to impress and is solidifying his roster spot. Dillon Mitchell struggling.
3.) Kirk Cousins looking sharp again today. 3 of 4 in the first Red Zone drill with a TD to Kyle Rudolph and looked razor sharp in 7 on 7’s connecting with Rudolph on a really nice pass to throw him open. Hits Thielen in 11 on 11 with a Red Zone TD in the corner of the End Zone. Great job by Thielen to get both feet down for the score. Vikings offense looks good today. Here’s Theilen with a TD catch from Cousins beating Rhodes on the play:
4.) Rookie DT Armon Watts getting some reps today with the starters. He lined up at NT with Stephen & Holmes splitting starter reps at 3 tech. NT Jaleel Johnson didn’t play very well against the Saints so the Vikings could be looking at Watts to battle Johnson to be the primary backup to Linval Joseph.
5.) Vikings defenders got some interceptions & defensive scores today. Jayron Kearse picked off Cousins, Eric Wilson picked off Mannion and took it in for a “Pick 6” and Marcus Epps picked off Jake Browning twice with one of those also being a “Pick 6”. UDFA CB Nate Meadors didn’t get an interception but came close on 1 play and had several nice pass breakups today.
6.) Kyle Sloter looked the best of the backup QBs today. Jake Browning was easily the worst. Sean Mannion continues to get the 2nd team reps at QB.
7.) Mike Zimmer said he is impressed with his LB group and said it might be the deepest the position has been since he has been here. Singled out Eric Wilson & Rashard Cliett for their improved play and also said that Cameron Smith still has a lot to learn he is pleased with his progress so far. He said it is possible the Vikings could carry 7 Linebackers on the roster with all of them being active on game days.
8.) Mike Zimmer said it possible that Vedvik will both punt & kick in the same game during the preseason but that it is unlikely he would handle both in the regular season. Says that they will figure out where Vedvik is best suited for the team in practice & preseason games. For now he will practice & play both spots. Possibility exists that Vedvik could be used for Long Field Goals, Kickoffs & Punts with Bailey used on shorter FGs and Extra Points. Still no real clarity yet on Vedvik’s role.
9.) DE’s Danielle Hunter & Everson Griffen looked very good again today. With Weatherly rotating in plus improvements from Holmes & Mata’afa the Vikings could have a very elite pass rush from their D-line in 2019.
